3 Reasons to Choose Sakura
01 | Learning Not Just the Techniques, but the “Why”
We do more than simply teach Goju-Ryu techniques and etiquette.
Why do we perform a movement this way? Why do we bow?
We carefully explain the “why” behind each element—from the meaning of techniques and how to use the body, to breathing, the balance between tension and relaxation, and the respect for others that lies at the heart of karate etiquette.
Our goal is not simply to pass down techniques and traditions, but to help students understand the meaning and spirit behind them.
Not just what we do, but why we do it.
This is the approach to traditional karate that we value at Sakura Karate Dojo.

02 | Traditional Roots, Modern Competition
While our training is rooted in traditional Goju-Ryu, we also embrace the constantly evolving world of modern competitive karate.
In competitive karate, particularly sparring (kumite), there is no single style that is always the “right” way.
Through competitive experience in Japan, the United States, and other international settings, we have learned that techniques, distance, tactics, and approaches can vary across countries and competitive environments.
What matters is not simply copying a technique, but understanding why it works and when to use it.
Competitive karate is constantly evolving. Techniques and tactics that are effective today may change as the sport develops.
That is why we encourage students to think for themselves, recognize change, and adapt—sometimes even thinking one step ahead.
Rather than fitting every athlete into a single style, we help each student build on their individual strengths and develop their own karate.
Think for yourself. Recognize change. Adapt.
We believe these abilities are valuable not only in karate, but throughout life.

03 | Beyond Language — True Cross-Cultural Understanding
At Sakura Karate Dojo, students from a variety of nationalities and cultural backgrounds train together.
What we value is more than simply providing an environment where students can learn karate in English.
By training and interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds, students discover different ways of thinking, customs, and values, and learn to understand and respect those differences.
For students from international backgrounds, karate also provides an opportunity to experience Japanese culture and values firsthand—including respect, etiquette, and consideration for others.
This kind of understanding cannot be gained through knowledge alone. It develops naturally through real interaction and shared experiences.
Drawing on our instructors’ own experiences living abroad and working in international environments, we strive to create a place where cultural understanding goes both ways—where Japanese students can learn from other cultures, and international students can deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and values.
Beyond language, toward true cross-cultural understanding.
Through karate, we help students grow into people who can understand and respect others across differences in language, nationality, and culture.
